Abitur exams at the end of grade 12 focuses on language proficiency in German and English and offers a strong science curriculum, including compulsory biology, chemistry, and physics classes. In addition, students can take computer science as an elective. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3d3d3d;\">Curricula for subjects taught in German align with the school curriculum in Germany and are approved by the German Kultusministerkonferenz (State Secretaries\u00a0of Education). Curricula for subjects taught in English combine German requirements with Massachusetts\u2019 high state standards. <\/span><a style=\"color: #3d3d3d;\" href=\"https:\/\/gisbos.org\/the-german-approach\/\">Learn more about the German International Abitur.<\/a><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"130\" data-end=\"395\">At GISB, preparing students for the digital world is a key part of our educational approach. Students in Grades 9 and 10 will use school-provided Chromebooks during lessons when digital tools support learning. These devices remain at school and are not taken home. Students in Grades 11 and 12 are expected to bring their own laptops to school for use in class and to complete assignments.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3d3d3d;\">High school classes typically have no more than 18 students enrolled and provide an opportunity for each student to form close relationships with teachers and peers. Teachers know each student personally and provide individualized feedback on a regular basis and encourage students to reflect on their evolving abilities, strengths, growth areas, and interests.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>New in 2025-2026,\u00a0 the &#8220;Fachraumkonzept&#8221; introduces\u00a0a subject-centered room concept in which classrooms are organized by subject rather than assigned to a specific class. Instead of students staying in one room all day, they move between rooms that are tailored to the needs of each subject. This allows for a more focused and well-equipped learning environment, encourages collaboration among subject teachers, and supports clearer structures for classroom routines and responsibilities. It also promotes shared use of space and better maintenance of materials and resources. Unlike the American system, where teachers often stay in one room and students rotate through a fixed schedule of classes, the\u00a0Fachraumkonzept\u00a0emphasizes subject-centered spaces and shared teacher responsibility for rooms.<\/p>\n<p>While classes no longer have fixed homerooms, each grade retains a dedicated base room for class council and key events such as report card distribution and student orientation days. Students enjoy shared spaces throughout the day. From the lunch area for meals, to the library and cafeteria for a change of scenery, to the study hall for working or just relaxing. These areas are open to everyone, providing opportunities to meet up, collaborate, and spend time together.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3d3d3d;\">Students are assigned to a base room teacher who is their primary contact point. In grade 10, students embark on a trip to New York and take biology classes in cooperation with Harvard Medical School. <\/span>Over the course of 10 weeks, our Biology students make weekly trips to participate in the Med Science Program for direct experience with life-like mannequins in emergency medical situations. <a href=\"https:\/\/gisbos.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/GISB_podcast_harvardmedical.mp3\">Hear our students&#8217; perspectives (in many languages) on this incredible hands-on learning experience.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3d3d3d;\">Students have the opportunity to attend Model United Nations conferences, the MIT High School Conference, and Harvard&#8217;s German American Conference.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3d3d3d;\">The physical education curriculum includes activities off campus such as o<\/span><span style=\"color: #3d3d3d;\">utings to Harvard University\u2019s athletic facilities, s<\/span>wimming at Boston University, Rock-climbing at a local indoor climbing gym, CrossFit and more.<\/p>\n<p>GISB high school students are invited to apply for the GISB Merit Award, an annual award honoring academic excellence, extracurricular activities, and community service. A career orientation week takes place each year for students in grade 10. This week of practical work experience at a local company, non-profit organization, or laboratory acquaints students with a real-world workplace and helps them identify their interests and abilities.<\/p>\n<p>A special resource at GISB is our parents.
