Early Education: String Explorers begins in Pre-K

Starting in Pre-K, all students take part in our String Explorers program as part of the general music program. This is a universal, playful introduction to the string family, where students explore instruments through movement, listening, rhythm, and hands-on discovery.

Elementary School: Small group instrumental lessons during the school day

In Grades 1–4, we offer small-group instrumental lessons as part of the GISB Music Program. Students receive two hours of instruction per week during the school day in groups of 4–6 students.

Students in Grades 1–3 may choose between violin and cello. Beginning in Grade 4, students may also select trumpet, saxophone, or flute.

These lessons focus on developing foundational musical skills, including posture, tone production, intonation, rhythm, and musical expression, while also encouraging collaboration and confidence through ensemble-based learning. The small-group format allows students to benefit from both individualized attention and shared musical experiences.

Participation is voluntary. Families may choose to enroll their child in the instrumental program or continue with the general music classes.

Middle School: Small group instrumental lessons during the school day

In Grades 5-6, our instrumental program expands to include both string instruments (violin and cello) and wind instruments (flute, trumpet and saxophone) – giving students the opportunity to explore a wider range of musical voices. Students learn in groups of 4 – 6 and receive one hour of instruction per week during the school day.

Lessons at this level place a greater emphasis on ensemble skills, musical independence, and expressive playing, alongside continued development of core technique including tone production, breath control, posture, and articulation.

Participation is voluntary, families may choose to enroll their child or have them continue in the general music classes.

Private Instrumental Lessons: Centralized and streamlined

Private instrumental lessons after school are centrally organized through the school and open to all students from Preschool through Grade 12. Families can book afternoon lessons directly through GISB at clearly defined, consistent rates. This creates a simpler, more transparent system and ensures that private instruction is aligned with our overall music program. Learn more and find pricing details here.

Ensemble Program: One connected musical experience

A central part of our music program is the opportunity for students to play together. Our ensemble offerings create a continuous pathway from Lower Campus through Upper Campus, so students can grow musically over time.

Ensembles take place in the afternoons — Mondays at Lower Campus and Tuesdays at Upper Campus — and are open to all students currently taking music lessons. Students in instrumental lessons are strongly encouraged to participate — this is where musical learning truly comes together. Playing in an ensemble strengthens technique, listening, and confidence, while helping students apply their skills in a collaborative and meaningful way.

While the ensemble is open to all students currently taking music lessons, participants should be able to read basic music notation.

Music Vacation Programs: Expanding access and opportunities

We offer week-long music programs at the Upper Campus during Fall Break and February Break. These programs are open to both GISB students and external participants and will combine instrumental learning, ensemble work, and creative exploration.
