Medical Science Program at Harvard
GISB’s high school science program takes full advantage of the school’s proximity to world-class medical facilities in Boston. Students in grade 10 participate in a Havard Medical School program, consisting of nine modules, that allows students to experience the real-life excitement of giving emergency room care in a simulation lab. Already in the first session, after an introduction to the basics of vitals and practicing how to measure blood pressure and pulse, students faced their first case. Working as a team and analyzing the patient’s symptoms step by step, they made a diagnosis and discussed treatment. While working through these “emergency cases,” students apply biology-based classroom learning to real-life and culturally responsive medical cases affecting their community, such as diabetes, heart disease, substance abuse, and trauma. The modules immerse students in realistic simulated medical emergencies that motivate students to think critically and problem-solve in dynamic teams.
