International Student Program

Ready for an adventure? Spend a year at a private high school in Boston and immerse yourself in our vibrant, multilingual school community while exploring the rich history and culture of one of the oldest cities in the US.

German International School Boston hosts an exceptional group of international students every year in grades 9 through 12. They come from Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, Spain, Italy, France, Mexico, and many other places around the world. Students who join GISB either attend school in a German-speaking country or a school in the global network of German Schools Abroad. Students in the International Student Program (ISP) experience the supportive and resource-rich environment of an American private school in the heart of Boston, while remaining on track with studies back home thanks to our German curriculum. International students contribute to the cultural and social diversity of our Upper School, making GISB a vibrant place. The International Student Program is a core program at GISB, that empowers students for success in a global world.

ISP Student Spotlight: Meet Hanna

“I am Hanna, and I was an ISP student at GISB in 2024-25. I came from a German international school in the Netherlands, so didn’t expect the experience to be much different, but was pleasantly surprised.

What surprised me most was the sense of community at GISB. Almost everyone at the school knows everyone else. Even with the teachers, it was a more friendly relationship. You could always ask questions, and they were always there for you.

One highlight in Boston was the biology class at Harvard Medical School. It was a great experience. We simulated real medical conditions using dummies and learned how to deal best with patients.

Other highlights were the class trip to New York in September and ski week in February. We visited many sights in NYC, but seeing Hadestown on Broadway was my favorite. The trip was at the beginning of the school year, so helped me feel comfortable in class.

I quickly felt at home with my host family, and I made good lifelong friends quickly. Of course, there were also challenges during the year. Especially at the beginning, I had to learn to organize myself and approach people and become more independent. I could always turn to my host family if there was a problem I couldn’t manage myself.

I had a wonderful time at GISB that I will always remember, so I’m really grateful for all my experiences. In Dutch, we say it was “Geweldig.” I would recommend the GISB International Students Program to everyone.”
