Qualification for subjects taught in German or bilingually:
Preschool or kindergarten teachers must have native-level German language skills, hold a Bachelor’s degree, and have a minimum of two years of full-time teaching experience in an active, hands-on, early education setting.
Teachers in grades 1 – 12 must have passed both First and Second State Exams for elementary and/or secondary education, or equivalent.
Clarifying information for non-German applicants: In Germany, teacher training for Grades 1 – 12 consists of four to five years of undergraduate education followed by a two-year graduate course (equivalent to an M.A. in Education.) Aspiring teachers then take the First State Exam and, if they pass, engage in two further years of training as a student teacher before taking the Second State Exam to become a nationally-certified teachers. We, therefore, consider the U.S. equivalent for the Second State Exam to be a Ph.D.
Additional Qualifications:
- Flexibility in subject area (multiple certifications or experience)
- Exceptional differentiation skills and experience with cross-grade teaching and learning
- Experience teaching in a bilingual setting; commitment to employing language acquisition strategies regardless of subject
