Grade 11 Students Meet with Holocaust Survivor

During their Germany trip, grade 11 students had the honor to meet with Holocaust survivor Nick Hope at the KZ Dachau Memorial Site near Munich. Nick Hope was 17 years old when he was captured by the Nazis in 1942 in Ukraine. He spent over two years in the KZ Dachau before being rescued by American soldiers. Today, Mr. Hope lives in the United States. With his son and granddaughter, he visited Dachau on the 76th anniversary of the liberation of the KZ Dachau. Nick Hope’s native language is Russian, and he shared his harrowing story with our students with the help of a translator. GISB’s History Teacher Maren Wiederrecht says, “We anticipated a regular tour of the memorial site and were thrilled to have this unique opportunity. We thank Mr. Hope for sharing his story and answering our many questions.” Learning about and remembering the victims of the Holocaust is an integral part of history classes at GISB and every German school worldwide.
